I love my job- thoughts on being a makeup artist

Have I lately told you how much I love my job?

Well, in case I haven’t : I love my job a lot. And even more.
Everything about it. And I am striving to keep learning and building on my skills.
Being a make up artist, is such a rewarding job.
Not two days are ever the same, I am constantly meeting new people and that inspires me.
Connecting with people and creating something beautiful.
I feel so grateful that I am able to do what I love.
It’s definitely one of those job’s where you never stop learning, which is perfect for my curious self.

Fashion VS Weddings

I love every little bit about it.
Making the decision to become a freelance makeup artist was one of the best I have ever made.
As many of you know I do two different kinds of work, makeup for brides/private clients AND fashion/editorial work.
The two are very different from each other and I truly love them both.
Working weddings and being able to make the brides look their best is such a fabulous job, however also very challenging.

There is a common myth in the makeup artist world, coming from artists, that do weddings, although they don’t enjoy them, doing it “just for the money” or as their “bread and butter”, referring to their brides as if they would be the worst task on their to do list.
Even to the point that some artist think that no good makeup artist would do weddings. I work for the love of it. Life is tooooooo short to do anything that you don’t truly enjoy.
I feel I am wasting my time if I spent it with things that I don’t really care about, and I can only do a good job if I am enjoying and loving my work and bringing all passion and focus to it.
And yes, I dearly love the fashion work as well, the creative, quirky side of my job, meeting new people, listening to vibes & trends and finding a way to mirror whats happening on the catwalks and on the street.

The Best Of Both Worlds
So here is the truth: Many of the worlds best and most famous makeup artists are working on weddings!
I love weddings full stop. I even used to design wedding dresses and am just totally in love with LOVE.
A hopeless romantic that can’t get enough of real love stories, it’s the right environment for me.
I have not worked on any tacky weddings or with any bridezillas ever.
I have only ever worked with beautiful people inside and out.
And I don’t take on every client either, if I find they have a completely different style and philosophy about beauty, I do turn clients down from time to time too.
Another thing that really surprises me is that fashion and weddings are still seen as too almost opposite industries by many.
It’s time to wake up and see the signs!
There are so many fabulous fashion designers creating wedding dresses today, there are magazines like Vogue Brides who are highly editorial and so many wonderful online magazines like The Lane and countless blogs that show that fashion and weddings belong together!
Recently Refinery 29 features regular wedding posts as well, and I think the trend is for fashion and weddings to go hand in hand.
There is so much more room for creativity and opportunity to splurge on great design or simply loose yourself in your best ever DIY projects.
Not that every wedding has to be a fashion spectacle nor an over the top event.
But where else can you wear couture gowns, big head pieces or get a professional hair and makeup artist?
I love the big and the small weddings, the simple and the extravagant ones.

And I find it’s time for fashion&weddings to grow together!
I will try and find a nice balance here on the blog in the future.

I am looking forward to all the coming years and where my career will take me.
Thanks for taking the time to read through this LONG post!
What do you love about your job?

New season, new shoes & a new home office

Posted on: Wednesday, June 5, 2013

This is not about weddings or makeup, this is just about me and new work life over here.
Winter is very different here in Sydney.
I am from Germany, where winters get bitter cold and the atmosphere completely changes.
Although it’s chilly now and I do turn the gas heater on in the evenings, drink tea, eat pumpkin soup and sleep with hot water bottles on my feet,
during the day it still feels nice enough to sit outdoors in a cafe.
Some trees loose their leaves, but the city is still very green even now.
I wear shoes without socks even in winter! It’s amazing. My favourite new little “winter” shoes are pretty ballerinas, from House of Harlow 1960.
A little treat to make Winter time more fun.
I think I can safely say, I like Winter over here, a completely new experience for me.

While weddings are slowing down in June and July over here, there is plenty of admin to catch up on for me.
My beloved laptop just died, and after being a little confused and upset for a week, I am now all set up with a spanking new iMac,
which makes me feel all settled.
Winter work consists of plenty of paperwork, admin and business planning.
At the same time also of realizing my own makeup projects for my portfolio and collaborating with some wonderful people.
While most people in the industry are taking time off, I take time to settle in and organize myself for the busy season ahead.

I am only now finally getting into a bit of a routine in my new Sydney life and feels very good.

Green smoothies, Glowing Skin…

Posted on: Monday, March 25, 2013

Green smoothies, glowing skin and other essential items I couldn’t live without lately, as I have have been busy buzzing it’s all about keeping the right balance.

In January I joined a “green smoothie a day challenge” hosted by Simple Green Smoothies,I loved it so much that I am still going. Not every day maybe, but almost. And they are having another challenge in April, which I will definitely join.
It’s so good for your whole body and it’s super easy. It makes a real difference to your skin, I promise!
If you are a buzzing bee as well, or if you are on a pre-wedding detox this is definitely for you.

I put together a few things for you that really help me when I am flat out with work:

Green Smoothies: Healthy fresh food makes all the difference, and although I don’t have the time to prepare complicated meals right now,
chucking some fruit and veggies into a blender and pressing a button can be done in 5min. I make a different one every day.
My Favourite right now: 1 banana, 1 pear, 1 apple, 1 handful of baby spinach, 1/2 cup of soya or almond milk, 1 tsp. chia seeds, 1/2 cup water, 1 tsp Supergreens Powder. This recipe makes about 3 sundae glasses of smoothie!

Comfy shoes: I do like to look somewhat professional at work and won’t rock up to a shoot or wedding in flip flops (although I sometimes have to bring them along when shooting on the beach!) So: Comfortable chic shoes, that look like I am happy to work in them all day, but still somewhat stylish.
The ones above are from Geox. There is nothing worse then painful feet, on a long day of work, it’s so distracting, flat shoes are the way to go!

Little Lunch Break Swims: Whenever I can I sneak out for a quick swim in my lunch break, not just a little exercise and movement, but also great relaxation for sore muscles. I also get the best ideas why swimming and find it clears my head.
Love Balm: So small, it fits in every pocket, it keeps my lips nicely moisturized, soothes any dehydrated areas or dry patches and makes a great cuticle balm too. It smells divine of natural rose oil too, the smell that opens the heart chakra. Jurlique Love Balm in Rose, sooo goood!

What keeps you balanced when you are super busy?

And…Kiss! Stained Lips that stay put.

Posted on: Wednesday, March 6, 2013

lipstain
One of the challenges with Bridal makeup is how to find a cute lipstick that is kiss proof and doesn’t budge throughout the day.
I am not a fan of most long wearing lipsticks for a good reason: They do stay, but they don’t last nicely.
Instead they dry the lips and flake off over time. A pretty scary thought for your wedding day.
Most of the lovely hydrating creamy lipsticks that so look gorgeous however wear off rather quickly.
Which is fine, if you are happy to top up your lipstick. Topping up is better then flaky lips!

A perfect solution however is to use a Lip Stain! They stain the skin of your lips for the day without changing the texture. You see natural stained lips a lot on the catwalks lately and I love their contemporary feel. If you prefer a sheen, you can easily wear your favourite gloss over the top, just a dot in the center of your lips, will give you the volume and shine you love without turning everything into a sticky mess. As a professional makeup artist I love using Becca Beach Tint, Stila Crush Lip and ans Cheek stain, and Benefit Tints they all do great stains in a wide colour range.

How to master the stained lip:
1.Exfoliate your lips first, to make sure you remove all dry skin.
2. Moisturize your lips with a hydrating lipbalm.
3. Remove excess lipbalm by pressing lips onto a tissue.
4. Apply lipstain- let it set for a few seconds. Layer lipgloss over the top if you like.
5. KISS!

Surf magic or jumping into summer

Shoes Surf Magic by Clarks found here

As some of you might now, I am shortly moving to Sydney and that means
after this few weeks of London Autumn, I will skip Winter and will be jumping right into Summer.
For the special occasion I treated myself to a new pair of daily sandals.
I was looking for a pair of the perfect summer shoes for a while now.

New shoes to celebrate the new life.
They are called “Surf Magic”, so suitable! I can’t wait to wear them out.
They are so comfortable, like most Clarks shoes.
I am tempted to get another pair. One that’s just as comfortable but a little less casual.

I am so excited and am hoping for many new great opportunities.
And am looking forward to working with many beautiful brides in Australia.
There are already some exciting news for me, which I will share with you here shortly.
It seems like there are wonderful creative people down there, offering the most unique wedding services.
Such a pleasure to network with some of them online, and amazing to able to meet them in person very soon.

It feels to good to de-clutter, giving things to charity as well as replacing things, preparing myself for the lifestyle change.
Summer and Surf, here I come! Here is to a great start.

Sneaky preview of work lately

Posted on: Monday, April 9, 2012

Happy Easter Everyone!
Though I have mainly been brainstorming new ideas and concepts as well as feeding myself delicious cakes and coffees, I have also been doing a lot of make-up designs and great collaborations lately. And it seems like outdoor location has started too, which is extra exciting.
The sneaky preview below was a project with the great photographer Claire Huish and the fantastic Stylist Rosie Williams. Next to the tall beautiful model I look so very short.
I am looking forward to all the exciting work for this Spring and Summer.

about supernatural nails and japanese food

Posted on: Tuesday, March 6, 2012

It’s the little things in life that are making me very happy, like coffee in the sunshine,
or a new nail polish.
Nails are huge at the moment. Which makes me happy, since I have always loved nail colours a lot.
I am still staying away from nail art and sticking with simple uni colourings.
The other day I met the girls behind the hip nail polish brand Rococo Nail Apparel, Ange and Vernice Walker.
The talented sisters have worked as nail designers and celebrity manicurists with all the big names and started their own successful little family business.
At the same time they are also 2 very humble and extremely kind sisters. No wonder they came so far. Real team work.
And not only where this two interesting to chat to and told me about their passion for everything Japanese, including a slight very healthy obsession with Japanese food, they also offered to paint my nails and chose the coolest colour, which I now own as well (it’s LabNude 6.0).
A mannequin nude, somehow vintagey, somehow clean but edgy at the same time. Or in Rococo’s words: Supernatural.
Thanks ladies! So very nice to meet you, you have made my day.

Full On Make Up

Posted on: Friday, December 2, 2011

Recently I have been up a lot of make-up work.
Great and inspiring work, most of the time.
I met interesting people and have been learning and experimenting.
December should now get a little more quiet so I can catch up with blogging and updating my website.
And for Christmas cookies and tea.

I will post a few recent projects within the next weeks.
Have you all checked out the great Dashing Magazine?
I have done a little step by step make up tutorial in their first issue that just launched yesterday.
Happy December, all!

What does growing up mean to you?

Not long ago, I felt really far from being a grown-up.
27 has always been my idea of a grown up age.
Don’t ask me why. I turned 27 in January.
But was does it actually mean being a grown-up. Growing.
Our body stops growing in height when we are around 18 years.
Our mind will hopefully never stop growing.
Growing up to means to not cry over a lolly in the supermarket.
Literally. To me it means to start sharing what you have learned.
To keep up without complaining. To accept, without giving up.
To teach, beside sill learning.
To take yourself less seriously but to treat yourself and others with more respect.
My goals in life have lately drastically changed. So have my values.
Not that I am no longer full of silly ideas, and still a hopeless romantic, doing 100 different creative projects at a time…all that is hopefully never going to change. I am still learning, always.
But something is different.More Relaxed. Less drama.
Something happened within the last year. I feel more grown-up.
What does growing up mean to you?

The nightmare about the green dress

Posted on: Friday, September 9, 2011

Here is to another fashionable wedding : Full of very well dressed guests! See more here.
I had a dream last night. My mum forced me to get married out of the blue, and not enough she wanted the whole event in her backyard, and she invited her friends only. I said: ” But Mum, I haven’t got anything to wear just now.” She handed me a dress and said: “Sure you do!” – “But it’s green…”, I desperately tried to make my point. “Don’t be so fussy” she said, pushing me out in front of the guests. I was wearing flip-flops and a green dress. My future husbands family she sat down in a corner away from the other guests. None of my friends were attending,
The whole thing couldn’t have been further from what I wish my wedding to be like one day. Stupid nightmares!!!
We have a saying in Germany that if you want your dreams to become true, you shouldn’t share them with anyone.
I don’t want this to become true at all, so I thought I better share it with the whole world, just to be safe.
Happy wedding planning everyone!
