Talking all things Bridal with Hello May

Posted on: Monday, July 7, 2014

The wonderful magazine Hello May, just invited me to talk all things bridal & makeup over at their blog and also a little column in their current print Issue.
Thank you for having me!

“Today, here we are again, introducing you to the seriously lovely Liv Lundelius, a go-to favourite in the Sydney wedding industry when it comes to hair and make up.
Tell us a little about your background? I have lived in Berlin, New York and London before deciding to move to Australia, my background was in fashion design first, though my love has always been makeup.

How did you get into the hair and makeup game? I always wanted to do it, however after school I felt I really wanted to go down the more academic route, so I went to art school studying fashion design. I really enjoyed design, however after a little while, I felt a strong desire to come back to my first love. I have always done it, but I felt I wanted the time to gain professional skills, and time to practice and learn from others in the industry to get better and better. The decision was made in London, I told everyone that I wanted to retrain and then a friend of a friend sent me a link to a talent competition in which you could get a scholarship to one of London’s best makeup schools at the time. I knew this really was a one off chance, so I put everything into it…and won! A very good start for my new career. Since then I haven’t looked back. I love what I do.

Talk us through a typical day in the Liv Lundelius studio? Every day is fun and creative in its own way, yet no two days are the same as a freelance makeup artist. Rising up early, having a nice big coffee, walking the puppy, exercising or meditating and then my work day actually starts…

If I am not on a photo shoot or traveling to a wedding I will sort through my emails and reply to my clients and brides first thing. I will update my Instagram/Facebook with the latest work or inspiration and write a blog-post or beauty related article.

If I have time I do a little bit of research, I study the latest fashion advertising campaigns and editorials for makeup trend updates and browse through some of my favourite blogs and websites. Days in the studio are usually booked with consultations and makeup applications, where brides will come over to meet and we create their wedding makeup look. I will have magazines ready for inspiration and look through their ideas, we talk about the whole feel of her wedding, about skin and skin care and last about the actual makeup look that we want to create. After this I will clean my tools and makeup and prep for the next day.

Where do you find your inspiration? I find inspiration in life, real women and the stories behind people. Every makeup job is as individual and unique as the person it is applied to or the client it is created for. Anything can inspire me from a structure, texture or colour in nature to even more abstract inspirations such as character and mood.

Favourite look for the 2014/2015 season? Fresh radiant skin, softly blended defined eyes and a lip colour that brightens the skin. Simple and flawless with effortless hair!

If you weren’t a hair and makeup artist what would you be? An architect, an inventor, a car designer, a photographer, a fashion editor, a publisher, a traveler, a puppy trainer, a nutritionist, a yoga teacher, an ice cream maker, a writer or a unicorn!

All time fave beauty product? Only one? That’s tough, it would need to be an all rounder…like Avene Thermal Spring Water. Or pure organic coconut oil. Makeup wise my hero products are Nars Lipsticks, Chanel Foundations and By Terry Concealers. Fail. I can’t name only one…

Dream wedding destination? Outdoors, anywhere with sunshine. I do really love Croatia.

Favourite ceremony/reception venue? In Sydney my favourite is The Grounds of Alexandria.

Where can we see more of your work? Follow my Facebook page and check out my website.

Liv did the hair and makeup for our ‘Pedal to the Metal’ shoot that features in issue five of Hello May (which you can order online here with FREE postage) and we have included a few, never seen before, sneaky out takes of her handy work below with photos by the wonderful Lara Hotz and a rad behind the scenes video from Light Noise Films you can view here. Big thanks to Luisa Brimble for the beautiful portrait photo of Liv.”

They say that if you love what you do for a living you will never have to work a single day in your life ever again.

I love what I do and I am grateful everyday that I am living my dream.
What this quote doesn’t tell you is that you will still need time for yourself, holidays and quiet time to rest, which is too easy to forget,
when just being so happy about being busy and all the wonderful opportunities.
Being a professional makeup artist, I sometimes have to poke myself, that this is all real.
So many amazing have happened and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to travel to Bali as destination wedding makeup artist and can’t wait to work again in Europe and the USA.
It’s always important to remember how far you have come rather on how far there still is to go.
As beauty expert and beauty editor, I have had the chance to work with exciting brands lately and I have many more ideas.
Of course there are always new challenges, dreams & goals to achieve, but in the meantime I am very happy to be well on my way.
I am trying my best to find the balance, as I think I am a little bit of a workaholic, but heh, back to the topic:

HM05 Instagram promo

Photo shoots like the recent Hello May Editorial in Issue Five (go and grab your copy now!!!) are just a dream to work on
with an incredible team of creatives and just simply amazing, inspiring, funny and lovable people the final images of a
shoot like this will always mean a lot to me. The hairstyling & makeup for this was more out there then the usual clean fresh bridal look, and it was exciting to create this wild & powerful look.
Also this is one of my favourite and in my opinion the best wedding & lifestyle magazine there is.
To see my work in print is a very special moment and makes me warm & fuzzy inside.
And then after all that excitement, the behind the scenes video got released and reminded me once more of how much fun we had working on this.

Dress hunting inspiration- The different bridal POP UP shop

Posted on: Friday, March 28, 2014

A little while ago I have received an email from the genius behind a totally new bridal store concept from San Francisco I was smitten by her enthusiasm about independent, up and coming designers from around the world and her style. This is my kinda shop…only that I am not in the USA nor am I in need of a wedding dress right now. Otherwise I would possibly hop in the next plane.
While I can’t be there in person I felt I really wanted to share the LOVE and hopefully inspire some of you lovely readers.
In case any of you are around California, I had to share her Pop Up Invitation with you and hope you can make it.
Otherwise do check out her website and stay tuned for updates! I am sure it will be worth it and I would love to see this for myself.
This looks like fun and totally different to the conventional dusty and sometimes intimidating bridal stores out there.

Good luck with your dress hunt!

Another wonderful One Fine Day is coming up!

LIV LUNDELIUS – MAKE UP ARTIST
Thursday, January 23, 2014

As a young girl Liv Lundelius often recalls giving fashion styling and makeup advice to her mum and friends who, living in the German country side needed that little bit of extra help and confidence. She has since worked a number of events worldwide such as NYC, Berlin and London Fashion Weeks (pretty impressive!).

Liv has a unique passion for working with brides and enhancing their individual beauty, with subtle natural makeup. It is your day to shine so head over to Liv Lundelius website to view more of her amazing bridal make up.

Most memorable moment / idea/ experience that you have seen at a wedding you have worked on?
It’s beautiful each and every time to see family, friends and a happy couple all coming together to celebrate love. That in itself is the best idea ever.

Please share your best tip for a couple on their big day.
Be happy & and enjoy every moment of your day. Don’t worry about anything beyond your control, all that matters is that you are getting married to one another.

Just quickly complete the following sentences:

On a Sunday I like to:
Have a wedding booking ;) and otherwise sleep in and go for a nice long breakfast, a walk and some exploring with the camera and my little family.

A secret no- one knows about me:
I have never been homesick.

The one song guaranteed to get me on the dance floor:
Ha, there are so many. A better question would be if there is one song guaranteed to get me OFF the dancefloor ;-)

What can couples expect to see from me at One Fine Day:

Plenty of images of my previous work, a big smile and hopefully some great inspiration for their wedding day.

Come and meet me in person at the One Fine Day Wedding Fair!

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to once more being part of a wedding with the incredible Tim Coulson as photographer.
I adore his work, it’s simply beautiful and has a certain honesty about it, he manages to capture people in a very different and beautiful way.
This wedding was really special in many ways. The bride & groom were from France, and had a small number of family & friends coming over from Europe to celebrate with them.
Somehow french always manage to keep everything especially tasteful, and while Eve the beautiful bride was pregnant and had a gorgeous little bump, she looked effortless and fashionable in her chic and sleek dress,
and only a french woman could carry of those big ruffles and still look elegant and timeless. Congratulations Eve & Guillaume!
Thanks Tim for sharing the pictures with me!

Super fun “nerd” wedding of the creative couple Sarah&Damien photo by Thomas Stewart Photography

On the upside, I have been completely booked out with wonderful weddings & photoshoots!
On he downside I didn’t get the chance to keep this space up to date at the same time…
now that I am slowing down my week appointments coming up to Christmas while still being fully booked on the weekends for weddings,
I reserved some time today to catch up with everything on here.

So much has happened:
We got a fur baby; Dalston our little Havanese puppy came home 1.5 weeks ago, and we are loving him to bits.
Weddings have been plenty and one more beautiful and more fun than the next one.
Private clients have been booking the week days with makeup for Christmas parties.
We had a super fun Christmas party with everyone from the One Fine Day at the Watson’s Bay Hotel.
We are planning to redecorate and refurnish our place, and are excited to find a new place at some time in the New Year.
We are happily staying here in Double Bay, for at least the next 6 months, enjoying the Summer by the beach.
I am loving my job more than ever and am so incredibly grateful how great my first year in Sydney was career wise and want thank every single client, bride & booking, thanks to everyone that referred me to their friends, colleagues and family members:
It means the world to me!

I will continue to update with lot’s of new pictures of current work, beauty writing etc. during this week.
I hope you will all enjoy and are prepping yourself for the new year and a wonderful Christmas time.

It’s always so exciting to see my work in print, it makes my heart jump a little!
My latest work for the wonderful Hello May Magazine will be published tomorrow, so I thought I will show you a little sneak peek.

Here is how the superwoman Sophie, behind Hello May announced the next issue:

“First up we must send a virtual high five out to the crew behind our ‘Minutia’ shoot. A fashion editorial that celebrates the lace embellishments and delicate handiwork that goes into creating a bridal gown, like this one above from our friends at Rue De Seine.
Every frame taken by our pal and fashion photographer Jason Ierace hit the nail on the metaphorical head. We actually lost sleep trying to decide on which images to put in the magazine, so thought we’d share a few of our faves we were unable to include here on the blog!
Model Phoebe’s look was created by hair stylist Vanessa Henwood and make up artist Liv Lundelius, two extremely talented ladies based out of Sydney. You can check out more of Liv’s gorgeous work here on the Hello May directory.
Big thanks to the amazing Alexandra Thompson from The Edit for styling this gorgeous shoot and the ever so talented Poppies & Amber for the gorgeous floral creations. If you are a bride looking for bouquets, crowns or boutonnieres for your wedding day, be sure to check out more from Poppies & Amber here on the Hello May directory.
Issue three hits the newsstands tomorrow, Thursday the 7th of November, so get ready to storm your local newsagent with gusto folks and flip to page 96 for a plethora of gorgeous bridal gowns of the lace and detail variety!”

Ever involving, traveling and makeup-ing

Lately I was lucky to travel to many many beautiful locations for weddings,
from Whale Beach to the Southern Highlands over the Hunter Valley (where I am somehow going every week at the moment) up north even further all the way to wonderful beaches near Forster.
I have seen Kangaroos with their young in the pouch, I have watched whales, really close up near the coast, I have had wonderful dinners and have met
inspiring and warm people along the way. Even after having done so many weddings, each bride is unique to work with.
My beautiful bride Marli, has already send through a little preview for me of her beautiful bohemian beach wedding (photographer James Billing) and
the loved up couple Kaitlyn & Viktor (will show you a peak soon!) have only been some of my recent highlights.
Marli is actually the owner and mastermind behind her own brow bar where you can get THE best brows in Syndey, check it out!
I might do a little interview with her soon here on the blog! Didn’t she look stunning on her wedding day?

I appreciate my work and all the great opportunities I am getting every day.
I can’t wait to see where it takes me next. The next editorials, private clients and travels…the upcoming weddings,
master classes and collaborations. Ever involving, ever interesting. I love my job.

The above photos are a mixture of beautiful professional photos by Studiosomething and iPhone Pics of beautiful locations of recent weddings.

I am so grateful how rewarding my job is.
Lately I was lucky enough to always be able to work on the most wonderful weddings, meeting inspiring couples and families.
Hearing their love stories and get to know their own styles and unique personalities is what makes my job so special.
After a large and often very early wedding, I am usually very tired. The full concentration and giving everything for hours
and hours, I usually really need some rest afterwards. Even nicer when I then receive an email, text message or note from a bride.
These little Testimonials really make my day every time I receive one.
They make me want to do my very best each and every time, they want me to get better and better in what I do.
They want me to study on, learn more, keep practicing, coming up with new ideas, and always committing fully to every person that trusts to book me.

I have some exciting projects & collaborations lined up and am full of energy and new ideas.
Finally I feel I got a bit of a routine here in my new Australian life.

The latest heartwarming testimonials:

Hi Liv,
I can’t thank you enough for setting us up for the perfect day on Saturday. We appreciate that you came over so early to work your magic on us. Both you and Sonia did a wonderful job with the hair and make-up – the girls looked natural and beautiful and my mum was glowing! I couldn’t be happier. It has been such a pleasure working with you this past year, for my trial, my photo shoot and especially on the big day. Your relaxed nature and enthusiasm for what you do has made it a really enjoyable experience. Thank you so much for your huge contribution to our wedding day.
I will send you some professional photos when we get them!
Kind Regards,
Kitty

I am still recovering from the weekend, 2 fine days at the One Fine Day Wedding Fair in the Sun Studios in Alexandria.
It was so much fun, so busy, meeting so many great people.
Meeting new brides face to face and already booked ones coming by to say hello, meeting new vendors and catching up with the familiar ones.
Making new friends, and celebrating. It was great.
Dave was helping me big time with the stand and made coffee runs for everyone.
Maybe we got a little bit inspired by all the great vendors too and were talking a bit more about getting married…

The work afterwards in answering all the emails, is a little overwhelming. But so great too.
I am so happy grateful for the many bookings and great responds and trying my best to get back to everyone ASAP.

It’s Thursday night now and I am a little tired.
I will try and take half a day off tomorrow to relax and recharge before heading to an early morning wedding up the coast on Saturday.

I love my job. So much.
Thanks for everyone that came by!

Tuesday Tip- Look after your skin!

Posted on: Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Deckhouse-Woolwich-Wedding_0019(pp_w750_h501) Photo of my hand & brush by Tom Stewart

It’s Tuesday and I was asked to share some advice for brides to be on The Lane today:

Look after your skin!

“Your skin is the largest organ and it will reflect your health and lifestyle.Improving your skin doesn’t happen over night, allow enough time before the big day to address any issues as early as possible. Get holistic advice and prepare to make changes in nutrition as well as adapting skincare and treatments. If your skin is already good, don’t get tempted to experiment with it. Never try out new skincare products or treatments shortly before your wedding. Try everything you wish to use on your skin months before to avoid any allergic reactions.

“Now is not the time to experiment, I have seen brides that tried a new brow bar or spray tanning place or facial which did not give them the results they hoped for. I don’t want to scare anyone but i’s better to be safe than sorry. The better your skin is the more natural & the better your makeup will look on the day. All the time invested will pay off with that amazing glowing skin! “
